Elizabeth Hammond

Artist and Educator

Statement

Elizabeth Hammond uses drawing to investigate seemingly conflicting objects and animals with different surfaces and textures. She brings together on a page, incongruous objects and animals in order to highlight the inherent qualities of both, and their place of belonging. Through these incongruous compositions, a provoking and unusual narrative is created for the viewer.

One of the most entrancing characteristics of Elizabeth’s work is her ability to draw the viewer into her way of seeing the world, a naïve, childlike view where one takes nothing for granted and everything is new and interesting; an Alice like wonder at the beauty of unlikely objects….

Bio

Elizabeth is a British artist who has exhibited as part of numerous group exhibitions in England, Perth and Melbourne, including ‘Constellations: A Large Number of Small Drawings’ at the RMIT Gallery VIC, Australia. She held her first solo exhibition at the Free Range Gallery in Perth WA, Australia. In this exhibition Elizabeth presented new work that further investigated the intriguing relationship that forms between her meticulous drawings and the viewer. Through transforming two-dimensional works into interactive installations, she invited others to experience a more tangible element of the drawings. She hopes to explore these relational aesthetics further in her practice.

Elizabeth thoroughly enjoys teaching and lecturing, and has facilitated artistic learning at Curtin University, Australia and with Open Universities Australia. She also worked for several years at Fremantle Arts Centre. She teaches all ages and has led professional development sessions as well as primary and high school classes alongside undergraduate tutorials.

Much of her work is in private collections and she has completed many commissioned works.
